My teaching philosophy...

Reflection is an oft-maligned term among the Teacher Candidates in the program, but I have embraced the opportunities for introspection, and have come out of the other side of the looking glass as a better person. It is only through reflection that I have come to such a close understanding of my teaching philosophy and the principles that guide me as an educator.

  • I believe in life-long learning. Learning is a journey that never ends.

  • I am passionate, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about teaching. When I am invested in what I teach, my students are more likely to be invested in what they learn.

  • Mindfullness, self-care, and social emotional competency are valuable life skills. I have made a commitment to promoting them in my practice.

  • I am committed to social justice and equity. Social justice issues are relevant and important, and it is vital for students to learn how to engage with critical issues and understand the impact of those issues upon others and themselves.

  • I have become skilled in creating caring environments which feature respect, positive reinforcement, and growth. All people tend to have better success when there are high yet reasonable expectations and clear, firm, logical boundaries set for their behaviour, interactions, and work.

  • I believe in assessment which is built around the concept of a growth mindset (Dweck 2006). Students are not static or fixed, and need only the right guidance and environment to grow.

  • I make relationships and connections a priority. Students who know that they are recognized and valued as individuals - both inside and outside of school settings - will be more engaged, and will learn the values of interconnection, empathy, and respect.

  • I value the teaching profession and view it as a personal vocation. I am committed to bringing my principles to each and every class and being a model teacher and model human, to the very best of my ability.
